Two nights in the Sahara is better for most travelers, because one night only gives you sunset and sunrise. After a long drive to Merzouga you arrive in the late afternoon, ride a camel to camp, have dinner and leave after breakfast. A second night gives you a full day in the desert with no driving at all. One night still works well if your route continues onward and your trip is short.

As a Moroccan local operator, we plan both. Here is what each really looks like.

One night in the Sahara, hour by hour

TimeWhat happens
Early morningLeave Fez or the Dades Valley
Afternoon6–9 hours of driving with stops
Around 5–6 pmCamel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes
EveningSunset, dinner and Berber music at camp
Next morningSunrise from a dune, breakfast, then back on the road

You see the most famous moments, the camel ride and the sunset, but you spend about 15 hours in the desert, and most of them in the dark.

Two nights in the Sahara, hour by hour

The first evening is the same. The difference is the day in between:

  • Morning: sunrise without having to rush, breakfast at camp.
  • Late morning: a 4×4 trip across the Erg Chebbi landscape, a visit to a nomad family for mint tea, and the old mines of the region.
  • Lunch: in a local restaurant, or madfouna, the Berber “pizza” baked in the sand.
  • Afternoon: Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, then sandboarding, quad biking or a quiet afternoon at camp.
  • Evening: a second sunset from the dunes and a second night under the stars.

You also break up two long driving days with a full day off the road, which makes the whole trip feel less rushed.

When one night is enough

One night makes sense when:

  • Your trip is 8 days or less and you also want Fez or the coast.
  • The desert is on the way, not a return trip. Driving in from Fez and out toward Skoura or the Dades Valley means you never retrace the road.
  • You have been to a desert before and mainly want the camel ride and the stars.

Our Wonders of Morocco tour, Morocco food tour and Morocco Discovery tour each spend one night in the dunes and continue the next day, which keeps room for the other highlights of those routes.

When you should stay two nights

Two nights is the better choice when:

  • You start and end in Marrakech. The desert is a 9 to 10 hour drive away, so it is worth staying once you are there. Our 9-day Marrakech desert tour plans two nights.
  • You are traveling with children. A day without the car makes a huge difference. See our 7-day family Sahara tour.
  • The Sahara is the reason for your trip. You will want the full day in the dunes.

Our Classic Morocco tour, 15-day Morocco tour and Marrakech to Casablanca tour all include two nights. See every route and how many desert nights it includes on our Sahara desert tours page.

What about three nights?

Three nights is rare, but it suits photographers, travelers who want to stay in a remote camp deeper in the dunes, or anyone who wants a real rest in the middle of a long trip.

Tips for your desert nights

  • Pack a small overnight bag. Your suitcase stays in the vehicle at the edge of the dunes.
  • Bring warm layers. Even after a hot day, desert nights can be cold, especially from November to March.
  • Choose the right camp level. Camps range from simple tents to luxury tents with private bathrooms. On our private tours the camp matches your package level.
  • Check the moon. A new moon gives the best stars, and a full moon lights the dunes beautifully.

Frequently asked questions

Is one night in the Sahara worth it?

Yes, if your route passes through the desert anyway. The camel ride at sunset and a night under the stars are unforgettable. But if you drive from Marrakech just for the desert, stay two nights.

Is the camel ride on both nights?

On our tours you ride a camel into the dunes on the first evening. On the second day you return to camp by 4×4 after the desert excursion.

Which desert is best for one night near Marrakech?

If you only have one night and are based in Marrakech, consider the Agafay Desert, 45 minutes from the city. It has no dunes, but no long drive either. Read our comparison of Merzouga vs Agafay.
