About this tour
This Marrakech Sahara tour is a round trip that crosses the High Atlas Mountains to the UNESCO site of Aït Benhaddou, then on through the Dades Valley and the dramatic Todra Gorge to the Sahara at Merzouga.
A full day in the desert — nomadic villages, a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes, and a night of stargazing at a luxury camp — is the heart of this trip, bookended by Marrakech’s medina on either side.
As a Moroccan local operator, we hand-pick every riad, camp and guide on this route. Every itinerary can be tailored to your dates, pace and interests.

The journey

Welcome to Morocco. Your private driver meets you at Marrakech Menara Airport and takes you to your riad or hotel. Some riads sit in lanes too narrow for a car, so your driver may help you arrange a porter for your luggage to your Riad.
The evening orientation tour in the Medina to know or to explore the nearby surroundings at your own pace. Dinner is included tonight. Time at leisure.

A private guided tour of Marrakech. You see the exterior of the Koutoubia Mosque, whose 77-metre minaret is the landmark of the city, and visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa, an Islamic school founded in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 16th, known for its carved cedar, stucco and zellige tilework around a central courtyard.
You then have time to explore the vibrant souks, where metalworkers, and artisans still work in small workshops. Next, visit Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, the heart of the city, where food stalls, musicians and storytellers fill the square in the evening. In the afternoon you can add an optional traditional hammam, a centuries-old bathing ritual of steam, black soap and full-body exfoliation. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure.

After breakfast you leave Marrakech and head south into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The road climbs through switchbacks and Berber villages, with wide views over the peaks, and there are photo stops along the way. You then visit Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Morocco’s most famous fortified ksar. Built of earth and clay along an old caravan route, it has appeared in many films and television series.
In the afternoon you continue through scenic rock formations and Berber villages to the Dades Valley, known for its dramatic landscapes. Dinner is included at your accommodation. This is a long driving day, with plenty of stops to stretch your legs. Lunch is at your leisure.

After breakfast you drive east through the dramatic Todra Gorge, one of Morocco’s most spectacular canyons, where the walls rise up to 300 metres on either side. There is time for a short walk along the river and for photographs.
The drive continues through palm groves and changing desert landscapes to Merzouga. Once you arrive, ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes to your luxury desert camp. The evening brings a traditional Berber dinner, stargazing and live music at the camp. With almost no light pollution, the night sky is exceptional on clear evenings.

Rise early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, a highlight of the trip. You then visit a local nomadic community, where you learn how families live in this part of the desert. Next visit the mines, then khamlia to attend gnaoua performace. Afterward, head to Rissani market, a traditional Berber market town where farmers and traders from the region come to buy and sell. (This is weekly market and sometimes not full on the other days) Lunch is a Berber pizza, a traditional dish baked in the sand.
In the afternoon return back to your luxury desert camp. Time at leisure. The evening brings a traditional Berber dinner, stargazing and live music at the camp.

After an early breakfast, you leave the desert and head back to Marrakech. This is the longest drive of the trip, so the departure is early, but the route crosses the same dramatic landscapes in reverse, and your driver makes stops along the way for lunch or coffee, a good moment to stretch your legs.
You arrive in Marrakech in the evening, check back into your accommodation, and a farewell dinner at a Marrakech restaurant closes your journey. Lunch is at your leisure.
After breakfast, a private transfer takes you to Marrakech Menara Airport for your departure flight.
Itinerary can be adjusted to your dates, pace and interests.
