About this tour
This Morocco classic tour begins in Casablanca and winds north to the royal city of Rabat before settling into Fes, where a full day with a private guide takes you deep into one of the world’s oldest living medinas.
From there, the real adventure begins: a spectacular overland crossing through the Middle Atlas to the Sahara, two nights under canvas and stars at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, and a journey back west along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, through the Valley of Roses and the UNESCO-listed village of Ait Ben Haddou.
The trip closes with three full days in Marrakech, enough time to properly explore the souks, the imperial palaces, and unwind with a traditional hammam before you fly home.
As a Moroccan local operator, we hand-pick every riad, camp and guide on this route. Every itinerary can be tailored to your dates, pace and interests.

The journey
Arrive at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, where a private transfer takes you to your hotel. After checking in and resting from your flight, early arrivals can optionally visit the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, with a 200-metre minaret, the tallest religious structure on Earth, set directly on the Atlantic coast. Dinner is at your leisure this evening.
After breakfast, depart north toward Fes, stopping in Rabat, Morocco’s royal capital. Explore the iconic Hassan Tower and its forest of 200 stone columns, then visit the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a masterpiece of modern Moroccan craftsmanship and the resting place of King Mohammed V and his two sons. Continue northeast through Morocco’s fertile heartland, arriving in Fes by early evening to check into your riad, followed by a welcome dinner.
Spend a full day with a private local guide exploring Fes, a UNESCO-listed site and the world’s largest car-free urban area. Highlights include the exterior of the Royal Palace, the historic Mellah (Jewish Quarter), a visit to ceramic manufactory, the vibrant souks, Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University (the exteriro) the world’s oldest continually operating university, founded in 859 AD, and the 14th-century Madrasa. Visit the legendary Chouara Tannery and meet the ateliers of Fes’s ceramic, metalwork, woodcarving and textile artisans before returning to your riad.
An early departure for a long but spectacular journey to the desert crossing (~480 km, 7–8 hours). The journey includes different stops. The first one will be in Ifrane, Morocco’s alpine-style town, then the Azrou cedar forests to see Barbary macaques in their natural habitat, with a lunch stop along the way. After crossing the Middle Atlas through the dramatic Ziz Valley, arrive in Merzouga as the sun lowers over the Erg Chebbi dunes for a camel trek into the sand to your camp in the desert. Settle into your traditional Berber tent for a dinner with live Berber music under a full sky of stars.
Optional wake up to see the sunrise over the dunes, have breakfast in your camp, then join 4×4 drivers to explore the desert, visit a nomadic Berber family, and see the old silver and lead mines of the Merzouga region. Taste madfouna, a traditional Berber “pizza” baked underground in the sand for your lunch. The afternoon is free to relax at camp, with optional sandboarding or quad biking across the Erg Chebbi landscape. Afterward time at your leisure to take photos in the dunes to relax in this magical place.
Depart westward (~220 km, 4–5 hours) along the legendary Draa-Tafilalet route past a string of ancient earthen kasbahs, stopping in Todgha and the Valley of Roses (Kelaa M’gouna), Morocco’s rose capital, it includes a visit to a women’s cooperative producing rose water and rose oil. Arrive in Dades Valley or Skoura with time to explore the gorge and palm groves before dinner with views of the canyon.
Depart toward Marrakech (~290 km, 5.5–6.5 hours) with a stop at Ait Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A fortified ksar built entirely of earthen clay, famously used as a filming location for Game of Thrones, Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and The Mummy. Have a walking tour in the site for around 1 hour. After lunch in the High Atlas and a crossing of the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon for check-in. Afterward, get ready for an orientation walk through the medina.
A full guided tour of Marrakech’s imperial landmarks, start your day by visiting the 14th-century Ben Youssef Madrasa, the 19th-century Bahia Palace with its gardens and tilework, and the iconic 77-metre Koutoubia Mosque minaret, followed by a walk through the legendary souks. In the afternoon, join a traditional Moroccan cooking class where you will prepare your own meal from scratch, learning classic dishes such as tagine, couscous, and Moroccan salads with a local chef, and enjoy what you have made as your dinner for the evening.
This day is yours to shape. Select the experience that suits you best from the three options below:
Option A: City Leisure, Hammam & Farewell Dinner
A relaxed free day to spend however you choose in Marrakech, browse the souks for last-minute treasures, revisit a favourite corner of the medina, or simply rest at your riad. In the afternoon, unwind with a traditional Moroccan hammam and spa session, a centuries-old bathing ritual of steam, black soap, and full-body exfoliation. The evening closes with a farewell dinner at a nice Marrakech restaurant.
Option B: Day Trip to Imlil & High Atlas Mountains
An early morning escape into the High Atlas Mountains for a guided hike in the Imlil Valley, dramatic mountain scenery, Berber villages clinging to the hillsides, and trails through walnut groves and terraced fields. Return to Marrakech in the afternoon for time at leisure, followed by a farewell dinner in the evening.
Option C: Day Trip to Essaouira
A scenic drive to Essaouira (approximately 2.5 hours), the charming Atlantic coastal city known for its UNESCO-listed medina, Portuguese ramparts, and constant sea breeze.
