About this tour
This Morocco food tour follows our signature route from Tangier through Chefchaouen, Fez, the Sahara, and the coast to Marrakech — but built specifically around food: tasting tours in the souks of Fez, a cooking class in Marrakech, and genuine market visits rather than rushed sightseeing.
It’s the right choice for travelers who want to understand Morocco through its kitchens and markets as much as its monuments.
As a Moroccan local operator, we hand-pick every riad, camp and guide on this route. Every itinerary can be tailored to your dates, pace and interests.

The journey
Your driver meets you at Tangier Airport and takes you to your hotel. Once you have settled in, we explore a city that faces Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar, starting with a stop at the historic Café Baba in the Medina, long a favorite of writers and artists. From there we continue to the Kasbah, the old hilltop fortress quarter, before dinner.
This is a relaxed first day. The order of the evening adapts to your flight time, so there is no need to rush after travelling.
After breakfast, drive south into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, the Blue City. On the way, stop at Tétouan, known as the “White Dove,” is a historic city in northern Morocco nestled between the Rif Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea that features a rare blend of Andalusian and Moroccan heritage. Then continue the Chefchaouen, The lanes, stairways and doorways of its old town are washed in shades of blue, and the pace is slower and quieter than in Morocco’s big cities. Lunch is included, and the afternoon is yours to wander and take photographs.
The old town is hilly and cobbled, so bring comfortable walking shoes.
Today you leave the mountains for Fez, with a stop at Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entrance is included. You then continue to a farm near Meknes for a lunch stop in the countryside, before the final drive into Fez, where you check in and have dinner.
This is a full travel day, broken up by the stops along the way.
A full day in Fez, Morocco’s oldest imperial city, built around a car-free medieval medina. You begin in Fes el jdid, where you will see the Royal Palace (the exterior), Jewish Quarter and visit a ceramic workshop, then taste your way through the souks on a food tour that serves as your lunch. The afternoon continues through the medieval Medina to the tanneries, where leather is still dyed in open stone vats. Afterward return back to your Riad for and get ready for dinner (at leisure).
Expect around six hours of exploring on foot. The lanes are narrow, and busy, so wear comfortable shoes.
This is the longest drive of the trip, taking you from Fez to the Sahara. The first stop is Ifrane, a town with an alpine feel in the Middle Atlas, and the nearby cedar forest, home to wild Barbary macaques. Lunch is at a restaurant in Midelt, and after that the landscape opens up into desert.
On arrival, get ready for a camel ride to your luxury desert camp. After dinner enjoy Berber local Berber music. Nights in the desert are quiet and clear, and it cools quickly after sunset.
Leave the dunes and head to the Todra Gorge, then follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Valley of Roses, passing oases and clay-built kasbahs along the way. A visit to a women’s cooperative that specializes in rose water is included on the route.
Depending on your arrival time, you may see Aït Ben Haddou at sunset. This fortified earthen village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a well-known film location, otherwise it will be in the morning of the next day. Tonight’s accommodation is a kasbah in Aït Ben Haddou.
If you did not see Aït Ben Haddou at sunset yesterday, you visit it this morning. Then you continue west to the Atlantic coast and the walled port town of Essaouira, a long drive broken up by stops along the way. Driver through the Tizen Tichka pass and lunch in a restaurant in the mountains.
After checking in, explore the Medina and Kasbah, with free time by the beach. The sea breeze makes a welcome change after the desert.
Enjoy a slower morning in Essaouira. A guided walking tour of Essaouira’s UNESCO-listed medina, including the Skala de la Kasbah and a stroll through the port for fresh oysters and fish, with the afternoon free for the beach and dinner at a local restaurant in the evening.
Free time in Essaouira before driving to Marrakech. You arrive early afternoon and join a cooking class, where you prepare a meal that doubles as your dinner. Afterward, check in, and then have an orientation tour of the city.
A full day in Marrakech. A sightseeing tour takes you through the monuments and souks of the Medina, with entrance to the Ben Youssef Madrasa included. Marrakech is busy and lively, so pace yourself and wear comfortable shoes. A food tour lets you taste Moroccan dishes in the heart of the Medina during lunch time. The evening is free to revisit the souks, relax at your hotel, or ask us to arrange something special. Dinner is included this evening, your last night in Morocco.
After breakfast, your driver takes you to Marrakech Airport in time for your departure flight. Pickup time is set around your flight.
