A night in the Sahara is the moment most travelers remember longest. At Merzouga, the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to about 150 metres. You ride a camel into them at sunset, have dinner with Berber music at a desert camp, and wake up to watch the sun rise over the sand.

Merzouga is a full day’s drive from Marrakech or Fes, so the desert is always part of a longer route through the High Atlas, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs or the Middle Atlas. All 11 tours below include at least one night in the dunes, and most include two, which gives you a full day in the desert by 4×4. Every tour is private, so it’s just your group, your driver and your guides, on your dates.

What to expect

Your Days in the Desert

  • Arrival: you reach Merzouga in the late afternoon and ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes to your camp, timed for sunset.
  • The camp: private tents with real beds, and dinner with Berber music around the fire. The camp level matches the comfort level of your tour.
  • A full desert day (two-night tours): a 4×4 trip to nomad families, Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, the old mines and lunch in a local restaurant. Sandboarding and quad biking are optional.
  • Sunrise: climb a dune at dawn for the view before breakfast.

Pack a small overnight bag, a warm layer for the evening and a scarf for wind and sand. More in our Sahara Desert travel guide.

Sahara Tour FAQ

Merzouga is about 550 kilometres from Marrakech, around 9 to 10 hours of driving. Our routes break the journey with stops at Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley or the Todra Gorge, so you never drive it in one go.

One night gives you the camel ride, sunset and sunrise. Two nights add a full day in the desert without driving, which we recommend if you start and end in Marrakech or travel with children.

March to May and October to November have warm days and cool nights. Summer days are very hot, and winter nights can be close to freezing, though the days are often sunny.

Yes. Our 7-day family tour to the Sahara is paced for children, with two nights in the dunes and plenty of stops along the way.

Yes. Every tour is private, so we can change the start city, add nights in the desert or adjust the hotel level. Tell us your dates and we will plan it with you.
