About this tour

Morocco’s Complete Journey: Imperial Cities, the Blue Pearl, the Sahara, and the Atlantic Coast

This 15-day Morocco tour begins in Casablanca and heads straight to Rabat, Morocco’s elegant royal capital, before continuing into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen — the Blue City — for two full days among its blue-washed alleyways.

From there the route runs through Fez’s living medina, across the Middle Atlas to two nights in the Sahara at Merzouga, then west along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Ouarzazate and the UNESCO village of Aït Benhaddou, before reaching the Atlantic coast at Essaouira for two more days by the sea.

The final stretch takes you through a night in the Agafay desert just outside Marrakech, then three full days in the Red City itself — souks, palaces, gardens, and a farewell dinner to close one of our most complete Morocco itineraries.

As a Moroccan local operator, we hand-pick every riad, camp and guide on this route. Every itinerary can be tailored to your dates, pace and interests.

Welcome to Morocco. You land at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, where your private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you to Rabat, the capital, about an hour away. Your driver helps with your luggage and answers your first questions about the trip.

After checking in at your hotel and resting, the evening is free. If you have the energy, the old medina of Rabat is calm compared with those of other Moroccan cities, and a good place for a first walk. Your welcome dinner closes the day. The timing adapts to your flight, so there is no need to rush after a long journey.

Highlights: Airport welcome · Rabat medina at your own pace · Welcome dinner

Drive: About 1 hour · Meals: Welcome Dinner · Overnight: Rabat

Your guide takes you through the main sights of Rabat. You start at the Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of a 12th-century mosque, and the Mohammed V Mausoleum beside it, one of the finest examples of modern Moroccan craftsmanship. Then you walk through the Kasbah of the Udayas, a whitewashed fortress quarter with blue-painted lanes and wide views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Bouregreg river.

In the afternoon you drive north into the Rif Mountains. The landscape turns greener and more rugged as you climb, and you reach Chefchaouen by evening. You check into your riad in the Blue City, and the rest of the day is yours to settle in.

Highlights: Hassan Tower · Mohammed V Mausoleum · Kasbah of the Udayas · Arrival in Chefchaouen

Drive: About 4 hours · Meals: Breakfast · Overnight: Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is a town to explore slowly. Your guide leads a walking tour through its blue-washed alleyways, stairways and doorways, and to Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the main square beside the old kasbah, lined with cafés. You learn about the town’s Andalusian and Berber past and how it came to be painted blue. It is also a good place to pick up local woven blankets, goat cheese and handmade crafts.

The afternoon is free. You can rest at your riad, shop, or walk up to the Spanish Mosque for a sweeping view over the town and the mountains, best in the late afternoon light. The climb takes around half an hour from town, and the path is uneven, so wear comfortable shoes. Dinner is at a traditional Moroccan restaurant.

Highlights: Guided walk through the Blue City · Plaza Uta el-Hammam · Spanish Mosque viewpoint · Traditional dinner

Drive: No driving today · Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Chefchaouen

After breakfast you leave the Rif and drive south toward Fez, with a stop in Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Here you see the monumental Bab Mansour Gate, often called the most beautiful gate in the country, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the sultan who made Meknes his capital in the 17th century.

You reach Fez in the afternoon and check into your riad. The evening is free to rest or take a first look around. Tomorrow is a full day in the medina, so tonight is a good time to relax.

Highlights: Meknes · Bab Mansour Gate · Moulay Ismail Mausoleum · Arrival in Fez

Drive: About 4 hours, with stops · Meals: Breakfast · Overnight: Fez

Today is a full guided day in Fez, home to one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You start at the exterior of the Royal Palace, with its brass doors and tiled walls, then walk through the Jewish Quarter (the Mellah), with its distinctive balconies and old synagogue streets. A visit to a ceramic workshop shows how Fez’s famous blue pottery is shaped, painted and fired by hand.

In the afternoon you go deeper into the medina’s souks and artisan ateliers, passing the exterior of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 and widely considered the oldest continually operating university in the world. You also visit the Chouara Tanneries, where leather is dyed in open stone vats, a method that has barely changed in centuries. Dinner is at a traditional riad or restaurant.

Plan on several hours of walking. The lanes are narrow, busy and uneven, so bring comfortable shoes. The tanneries have a strong smell, and your guide will offer a sprig of mint to hold.

Highlights: Royal Palace exterior · Jewish Quarter · Ceramic workshop · Souks and ateliers · Al Quaraouiyine · Chouara Tanneries

Drive: Mostly on foot in the medina · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Fez

This is the longest driving day of the trip, and it is also one of the most varied. You leave Fez and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping first at Ifrane, a tidy alpine-style town known as Morocco’s Little Switzerland. Next is the Azrou Cedar Forest, where wild Barbary macaques come down to the roadside. Lunch is on the way.

In the afternoon the landscape changes. The cedar forest gives way to high plateaus, then to palm-filled valleys and the first dunes at the edge of the Sahara. You reach Merzouga in the evening, check into your hotel, and have dinner there. Bring a camera and a warm layer, as desert evenings cool quickly.

Highlights: Ifrane · Azrou Cedar Forest and wild monkeys · Middle Atlas scenery · Arrival at the Sahara

Drive: About 8–9 hours, with stops · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Merzouga (Sahara Desert)

A full day in the desert, with no long drive. You begin by visiting a nomadic village, where you learn how families live in this part of the Sahara, followed by a Gnawa music performance, a tradition of drumming and chanting with roots in sub-Saharan Africa.

In the afternoon you ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes, some of the tallest in Morocco, and you can watch the light change as the sun sets. You then return to your luxury desert camp, where a traditional Berber dinner is served under the stars. With almost no light pollution, the night sky is exceptional on clear evenings.

Highlights: Nomadic village · Gnawa music · Camel trek in Erg Chebbi · Berber dinner under the stars

Drive: No long drive today · Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Merzouga (Sahara Desert, luxury camp)

After breakfast you leave the dunes and head west along the legendary Road of 1000 Kasbahs. The route follows the southern flank of the High Atlas through palm groves, river valleys and villages with clay-built kasbahs, and your driver stops at several sites along the way for photos and short visits. Lunch is included.

You arrive in Ouarzazate, known as the Gateway to the Sahara, in the evening. The town is a convenient base for tomorrow’s visit to Aït Benhaddou.

Highlights: Road of 1000 Kasbahs · Palm groves and river valleys · Kasbah stops · Arrival in Ouarzazate

Drive: About 6–7 hours, with stops · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Ouarzazate

You start the morning at Aït Benhaddou, Morocco’s most famous fortified ksar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built of earth and clay along an old caravan route, it has appeared in many films and television series. Your guide takes you up through its alleys to the top for wide views over the valley.

In the afternoon you drive west, crossing the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, then continuing across the plains toward the Atlantic coast and Essaouira. This is a long travel day broken up by stops. You check into your riad on arrival.

Highlights: Aït Benhaddou (UNESCO) · High Atlas crossing · Arrival on the Atlantic coast

Drive: About 6–7 hours, with stops · Meals: Breakfast · Overnight: Essaouira

Essaouira is a relaxed, breezy coastal town with a walled medina that is also listed by UNESCO. Your guide takes you through its highlights, starting with the Skala de la Kasbah, the old sea ramparts lined with cannons, and its views over the Atlantic. You also stop at traditional artisan workshops, where the local specialty is woodwork made from thuya, a fragrant native wood.

The afternoon is free. You can walk the harbor and watch the blue fishing boats, spend time on the long beach, browse the souks, or visit one of the local art galleries. The wind off the ocean keeps the town cool, so bring a light jacket.

Highlights: Skala de la Kasbah · Thuya woodwork workshops · Harbor and beach · Local art galleries

Drive: No driving today · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Essaouira

The morning is free in Essaouira, so you can enjoy a slow breakfast, last-minute shopping, or one more walk along the ramparts. Then you drive inland toward Marrakech and on to the Agafay Desert, a rocky, lunar-looking landscape of stone and low hills about 45 minutes from the city, with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon.

You arrive in the afternoon at your luxury desert camp. Spend time by the pool, take an optional camel ride, and watch the sunset over the hills. Dinner and entertainment are at the camp. Agafay is a stony desert rather than a sandy one, which is a lovely contrast with the Sahara dunes you saw earlier.

Highlights: Free morning in Essaouira · Agafay stone desert · Luxury camp · Pool · Optional camel ride · Dinner and entertainment

Drive: About 3.5 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Agafay Desert (luxury camp)

After breakfast, a short drive of about 45 minutes brings you from the desert into Marrakech. Your guide takes you on an orientation tour of the medina and Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, the heart of the city and a UNESCO-recognized cultural space. You get a sense of the layout of the old city, the main landmarks, and how to get around, so the days ahead feel easy.

Dinner is at a traditional Moroccan restaurant. If you would like to see Jemaa el-Fnaa after dark, when the square fills with food stalls, musicians and storytellers, your guide can point you to the best time and place to do it.

Highlights: Marrakech medina orientation · Jemaa el-Fnaa Square · Traditional dinner

Drive: About 45 minutes · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Marrakech

A full day with your guide in Marrakech. You visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa, a 16th-century Islamic school known for its carved cedar, stucco and zellige tilework around a central courtyard. You then continue to the Majorelle Garden, the cobalt-blue garden created by the painter Jacques Majorelle, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum next door, which tells the story of the designer’s long connection to Marrakech.

In between, there is time to stroll the souks and sample Moroccan specialties along the way. Dinner is at a local restaurant.

Highlights: Ben Youssef Madrasa · Majorelle Garden · Yves Saint Laurent Museum · Souks and local specialties

Drive: Short transfers in town · Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Marrakech

Today is yours. You can shop in the souks for leather, ceramics, lamps and textiles, or explore at your own pace. If you would like ideas, your guide can suggest options such as the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs or the quiet Menara Gardens.

In the afternoon, you can add an optional hammam and spa experience, a traditional steam bath and scrub that makes a relaxing end to the trip. In the evening, we meet for a farewell dinner to celebrate your journey through Morocco.

Highlights: Free day · Shopping and exploring · Optional hammam and spa · Farewell dinner

Drive: No driving today · Meals: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner · Overnight: Marrakech

After breakfast, a private transfer takes you to Marrakech Menara Airport for your departure flight. Your driver will plan the pickup time around your flight, allowing comfortable time for check-in. We hope you leave with a lot of good memories, and we would love to welcome you back to Morocco.

Drive: Short airport transfer · Meals: Breakfast

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll arrive at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport and depart from Marrakech Menara Airport — a one-way loop, not a round trip from the same city, so book your flights accordingly.

Yes. This itinerary can be adjusted to your dates, pace and interests — extra nights in any city, a different accommodation tier, or changes to the route are all possible. Tell us what you’d like and we’ll tailor it.

A 30% deposit confirms your booking — pay it directly via our “Down Payment” option, or choose “Book Now, Pay Later” and we’ll send payment details by PayPal, Wise, or bank transfer. The remaining balance is settled in Morocco.

The remaining balance can be paid in Morocco — cash (no fee), Wise (no fee), PayPal (5% fee), or credit card (3% fee, in MAD). If we need to cancel (extremely rare, emergency only), your deposit is refunded in full. If you need to cancel: the deposit is non-refundable, but canceling 30+ days before departure lets you apply it to a postponed trip within the next two years, at no extra cost. Canceling within 0–29 days of departure may carry a hotel cancellation charge, which varies by property — we only pass on what we’re actually charged, nothing more.
