Choose Merzouga if you want real Sahara sand dunes and have at least 7 days. Choose Agafay if you have only a few days in Marrakech, are traveling with young children, or want a luxury desert night without a long drive. Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi dunes are the classic golden Sahara of photographs, a full day’s drive from Marrakech. Agafay is a rocky desert of low hills about 45 minutes from the city, with views of the Atlas Mountains.

Many of our guests do both, and they are not the same experience. Here is how they compare.

Merzouga: the Sahara of your imagination

Erg Chebbi is a sea of dunes on the edge of the Sahara near the Algerian border, with some dunes rising around 150 metres. You arrive in the late afternoon, ride a camel into the dunes as the sand turns orange, and sleep in a camp among them. At night the sky is full of stars, and in the morning you can climb a dune to watch the sunrise.

A second night lets you spend a full day in the desert by 4×4: visiting nomad families, hearing Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, sandboarding or simply walking the dunes. That is why most of our Sahara tours, such as the Classic Morocco tour and the 9-day Marrakech desert tour, plan two nights. Compare every route with nights in the dunes on our Sahara desert tours page.

The trade-off is time. Getting there takes a full day from Fez or from Marrakech each way, even though the drive itself, through the Middle or High Atlas, the kasbahs and the palm valleys, is one of the most beautiful in the country.

Agafay: a desert night close to Marrakech

Agafay is a stony desert of rolling hills just south-west of Marrakech, with the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon in winter and spring. There are no sand dunes, but the landscape is wide, quiet and dramatic at sunset.

Its camps are among the most comfortable in Morocco, with proper beds, private bathrooms, good restaurants and often a swimming pool. You arrive in the afternoon, ride a camel or a quad bike at sunset, have dinner with music and are back in Marrakech the next morning.

The trade-off is authenticity. Agafay is beautiful, but it is not the Sahara, and it is not remote.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Merzouga if:

  • You have 7 days or more, and seeing the Sahara dunes is a priority
  • You enjoy road trips and want to see the Atlas, the kasbahs and the oases along the way
  • You want the experience of sleeping deep in the dunes

Choose Agafay if:

  • You have 5 days or less, or your trip is based in Marrakech
  • You are traveling with young children who would struggle with long drives
  • You want a luxury desert night with a pool, close to the city

Do both if you have two weeks

Our 15-day Morocco tour spends two nights in Merzouga’s dunes, then a night in Agafay at the end of the trip, after the coast at Essaouira. The contrast between the sand sea and the stone desert is part of the pleasure. See the full 2 weeks in Morocco itinerary.

Agafay itineraries

Agafay fits easily into a short trip. Our 7-day family tour with Essaouira and Agafay combines two nights by the sea with a night in the desert and three days in Marrakech, and our family tour with Fez, Rabat and Agafay adds the imperial cities. The Imperial Cities tour also uses Agafay instead of the Sahara.

Frequently asked questions

Is Agafay a real desert?

Yes. It is a dry, rocky desert, but it has no sand dunes. If you picture the Sahara as golden dunes, that is Merzouga.

Can you do Merzouga as a day trip from Marrakech?

No. It is around 9 to 10 hours each way. The minimum is usually 3 days with one night in the desert, and we recommend at least two nights.

Is the camel ride included at Agafay?

On our tours it is optional when the trip also includes Merzouga, where you already ride into the dunes, and included when Agafay is your only desert.

Which is better for families?

For young children, Agafay, because the drive is short. Older children and teenagers usually love Merzouga, especially with a full day in the dunes. Our 7-day family Sahara tour is designed for families who want the real dunes.
