About this tour
This Morocco imperial cities tour loops from Casablanca first to the Strait of Gibraltar at Tangier, then south through the spiritual heart of Fes and the royal capital of Rabat.
Rather than the long haul to the Sahara, the route dips into the Agafay Desert just outside Marrakech for a genuine desert-camp night without adding days to the trip.
The journey closes with time in Marrakech’s medina before returning to Casablanca for departure — a complete imperial-cities itinerary in ten days.
As a Moroccan local operator, we hand-pick every riad, camp and guide on this route. Every itinerary can be tailored to your dates, pace and interests.

The journey

Welcome to Morocco. You land at Casablanca Mohammed V Airport, where your private driver meets you for the transfer to Tangier, around 4 to 4.5 hours north along the coast. (Flying into Tangier airport will save more time). Your driver can stop on the way if you need a break.
You check into your riad and rest after the journey. If you still have energy, you can take a short optional walk to explore the Kasbah. Afterward, get ready for a welcome dinner in Tangier.

A full day exploring Tangier, a port city that has faced Europe across the Strait of Gibraltar for centuries. You visit the Kasbah Museum, set in the old sultan’s palace on the hilltop, and the Tangier American Legation Museum, housed in the first property the United States ever owned abroad, given by the sultan of Morocco in 1821. You also see the bustling Grand Socco, the main square at the entrance to the medina, and walk the medina’s winding lanes.
In the afternoon you can add an optional excursion to Cape Spartel and the Hercules Caves, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure.

After breakfast you take a private transfer to Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and cultural heart, around 4.5 to 5 hours away. You can add an optional stop in Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, to see the monumental Bab Mansour Gate. Lunch in farm in the region of Meknes.
You arrive in Fes by late afternoon and check into your riad, with the rest of the day free to rest. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure.

A full guided day through Fes el Bali, the old medina and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. You pass the exterior of Al Quaraouiyine University, founded in 859 and widely considered the oldest continually operating university in the world, and visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, a 14th-century Islamic school known for its carved cedar, stucco and zellige tilework.
You also visit the iconic Chouara Tannery, where leather is dyed in open stone vats. Next, visit the Royal Palace (the exterior), and walk through the Mellah, the Jewish Quarter, with its distinctive balconies. Plan on several hours of walking, and wear comfortable shoes. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure.

After breakfast you take a private transfer to Rabat, the capital of Morocco, around 3.5 to 4 hours away. In the afternoon your guide takes you to the Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of a 12th-century mosque, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V beside it, a fine example of modern Moroccan craftsmanship.
You also visit the Kasbah of the Udayas, a whitewashed fortress quarter with wide views over the Atlantic Ocean. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure.

After breakfast you continue to the Agafay Desert, a rocky desert landscape in the region of Marrakech, about 4 hours from Rabat. Agafay is a stony desert rather than a sandy one, with low hills and the Atlas Mountains on the horizon.
You check into your luxury desert camp and enjoy a camel ride before sunset. Quad biking is also available as an optional activity. You watch the sun set over the Atlas Mountains, followed by dinner under the stars with live Berber music.

A relaxed morning in the desert, then a short transfer of around 45 minutes to Marrakech. You check into your riad, and the afternoon is free to relax.
In the evening your guide leads an orientation tour of the medina, giving you a sense of the layout of the old city so the days ahead feel easy. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure.

A full day discovering Marrakech’s highlights. You visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa, an Islamic school founded in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 16th, known for its carved cedar and zellige tilework. Entrance is included. You also see the Koutoubia Mosque, whose 77-metre minaret is the landmark of the city, and the Jardin Majorelle, the cobalt-blue garden created by the painter Jacques Majorelle.
The evening is free to wander the souks. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure.

A free day at your own pace. You can spend the afternoon with a hammam and spa experience, add an optional day trip into the Ourika Valley or the High Atlas foothills, or take more time to explore the medina and souks. We are happy to suggest a plan and book anything you like.
In the evening, a farewell dinner marks the end of your journey.
After breakfast, a private transfer takes you from Marrakech airport or from Casablanca, around 2.5 to 3 hours, in time for your international flight home. If your departure flight is early in the morning, we recommend spending the last night in Casablanca instead, for a more relaxed departure, or book a flight in the late afternoon to make sure you are there on time.
Itinerary can be adjusted to your dates, pace and interests.
